Why do we need this? Was this necessary?
Because. There are 30-something-year-old women who saw the 1991 animated classic in theaters and thought inside their tiny little minds, Wow, I'd love to see a REAL version of this someday. And guess what -- that finally happened. No, it wasn't necessary. No, we didn't need a live-action version of Beauty and the Beast. But I've been waiting 26 years to see a candlestick sing and dance its way through "Be Our Guest" and goddamn it, this movie delivered.
Yes. There were problems. No, none of them were around Lefou. But yes, I still loved this movie. I sat in my seat, grinning like an idiot, as Gaston's Luke Evans chewed the scenery and stole the show. I even got teary-eyed during the title song and watching Emma Watson whirl around the ballroom. I did wince at the awkward backstories for Belle and the Prince/Beast, however. I thought both were forced and tacked on and nothing else in the story developed from those backstories. But the overall narrative stayed true to the original thanks to some helpful updates and clarifications. The things we overlooked as children, such as why none of the villagers remembered their prince and his castle, weren't as easily ignored as adults.
But yes. I loved this movie. I can't stop thinking about the gorgeous sets, costumes, and dancing. The 7-year-old in me is so, so happy.
